Extension Communication and Interpersonal Skills

This topic includes any training relating to interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, and writing. This includes but is not limited to topics related to communication during conflict, difficult conversations, communicating across differences, active listening and adapting to various communication styles. Writing topics could include writing basics such as the writing process, style, audience, organization, and mechanics for various genres of writing. This is inclusive of both nonacademic writing and communicating science to the public and academic writing, research and academic honesty.

Indiana - Managing Conflict Effectively
Managing Conflict Effectively provides tips on responding to and resolving conflicts between two or mor individuals or groups. It includes completion of the Thomas-Kilman Instrument, helping participants better understand how they typically respond in a conflict situation. A discussion of some conflict scenarios is held in small groups, then reported back to the full group for further conversation. A similar presentation is included in the Purdue Extension New Educator Orientation session.

Iowa - Crucial Conversations for mastering dialogue
Crucial Conversations is a course teaching skills/tools for creating a positive environment for dialogue. A crucial conversation is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary and emotions are strong. When handled poorly or ignored, these conversations lead to strained relationships and dismal results. The workshop teaches participants to speak persuasively, not abrasively, foster teamwork and better decision-making, build acceptance rather than resistance, resolve individual and group disagreements.

Iowa - Agile EQ
Agile EQ utilizes Everything DiSC, providing participants with techniques to improve self-awareness and awareness of others, to be more effective in the workplace and contribute to a positive workplace culture. Agile EQ helps participants develop their emotional intelligence and adopt the optimal response in various situations.

North Dakota - Crucial Conversations
We offer two trainings related to communication and interpersonal skills. One of these is Crucial Conversations, which teaches participants to prepare and have difficult conversations. Emotional Intelligence educates participants on the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.
